Cutting Edge Conservation >
Audubon of Florida’s 2006 Legislative Goals
.
Everglades and Lake Okeechobee
We will continue to play a leadership role in securing legislative support for funds and new authority to move forward with Everglades restoration and Lake Okeechobee and Estuary Recovery. We are pushing for a combined $200 million in state funding for these projects this year.
Public Land Acquisition and Management
Audubon will aggressively campaign to spend out Florida Forever and replace it with a more ambitious program focused on regional ecosystem priorities. Our goal is to protect an acre of habitat for every acre of land developed. We will push for increases in funds for state land management to allow prescribed fire and exotics control as management tools.
Growth Management and Transportation
We will build on the concepts in SB 360 to allow more regional planning based on increased involvement by local citizens, so that decisions are made well in advance of pending development permits. We will continue to oppose new and expanded roads that cut through natural areas and important ecosystems.
Water
Audubon will be at the forefront of efforts to improve wetlands protection while defending existing water policy. We will build on last year’s efforts to control the causes of stormwater runoff pollution.
Wildlife Policy
With the addition of new staff with expertise in wildlife issues, Audubon will look for opportunities to pass stronger policies to protect wildlife.
