A Partnership between Audubon
of Florida and Ginn Resorts
Audubon
of Florida has been patrolling and protecting important
bird habitats, conducting scientific research, managing
more than 70,000 acres of sanctuaries, and influencing
landmark legislation in Florida since 1900. Through
the years Audubon of Florida has grown into the most
comprehensive conservation program of any non-profit
environmental organization in the state.
Ginn Resorts is a private real estate development and
management firm that has built a reputation for creating
quality leisure lifestyle and resort communities in
the Southeast. They have now set the standard in Florida
Bald Eagle protection at their Tesoro
community of luxury homes in Port St. Lucie.
In December 2003, Ginn Resorts discovered an eagle’s nest with two fledglings at its Tesoro community. At Bobby Ginn’s direction, the company went above and beyond regulations by removing 38 nearby residential lots from sale, at a cost of more than $28 million and redesigned the entire east side of the development. Because of these actions, the eagles were able to raise their fledglings to independence and in the spring of 2005 the pair fledged two more young.
In the fall of 2005, Ginn Resorts formed a partnership with Audubon of Florida to install cameras designed to record nesting activity. Hurricane Wilma brought the cameras down and ended the project, though the birds raised two young.
In September, 2006, the eagles returned and with the cameras installed in a new tree we eagerly awaited nesting. All went well until it was determined that the eggs were infertile.
However, we are thrilled to announce that the eagles have celebrated the birth of at least one hatchling, and all of the action can be viewed on the cameras.
Under this exciting partnership, Friends of the Eagle, Audubon and Ginn Resorts have joined in an educational campaign to inform the public of the need to protect the Bald Eagle and its habitat, and to show citizens throughout Florida and the nation what they can do to help protect this magnificent bird, and in the process, ensuring it is always a part of our nation’s future.
